One Small Step: Apollo 11 and the Legacy of the Space Age

For Everyone - A Great Book About The First Moon Landing
Released to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, this book presents a nice summary of the first moon landing mission from the training of the astronauts to their post-landing quarantine, through the use of numerous black and white and color photographs and supporting text. This book also includes some brief information about the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo missions that lead up to the first moon landing. There are also several shorts sections which examine the influence of the space race on several aspects of pop-culture of the 1950's and 1960's, by examining such topics as classic science fiction movies, television shows, space toys and NASA art. Even though this book is relatively short, it is a wonderful and nostalgic look back at one of the greatest moments in the history of the United States of American and all of humanity and is book that can be enjoyed by both young and old alike.

Pacific Clipper: The Untold Story
Published in Hardcover by The News Gazette (20 August, 2002)
Authors: Albert S. J. Tucker Jr., Matthew W. Paxton, and Eugene J. Dunning
Average review score:

Pacific Clipper a page turner
This book is a real pager turner. I only wish it had a few more pages to turn. The topic is fantastic and the riding style keeps you on the edge of your seat. This is a fantastic story and the accomplishement described is equivalent to the landing on the moon for 1930's. This book should defenitely be made into a movie. I see Tom Hanks getting another Oscar as the Pilot of the Clipper.

Packing for the Big Trip: Life Benefits from Death Awareness
Published in Paperback by Pathfinder Publishing of California (May, 1997)
Authors: Charlie Walton and Eugene D. Wheeler
Average review score:

Just what I needed.
This book was referred to me by a friend following the loss of my mother, and I have recommended it to several other friends since reading it. While I didn't agree with 100% of the book's contents, I could accept about 99%--and it spoke to me in a way that the typical sappy support-type books can't even approach. While it's certainly written for people of all faiths--even atheists or agnostics--Christians who enjoy unique theological viewpoints will benefit especially. If your heart needs more than sympathy to deal with the pain of death, this book offers a great deal of wisdom.

Paso Por Aqui
Published in Paperback by Univ of Oklahoma Pr (Trd) (June, 1973)
Authors: Eugene Manlove Rhodes and W. H. Koerner
Average review score:

"Passed By Here"
This short novel first appeared in the February 2-27 issues of the Saturday Evening Post in 1926. Rhodes was a writer living and writing out of New Mexico who was a very colorful person, often getting in trouble with the law (including with Sheriff Pat Garrett). This particular novel is regarded by many as one of the best westerns ever. In 1977 it was voted by the Western Writers of America one of the top twenty-five westerns of all time. Rhodes' novels are highly regarded in that they are felt to accurately depict life in the West. Apparently, Rhodes was an opponent of Sheriff Pat Garrett in his younger days yet grew incensed in his later years at how Garrett was mistreated in books and film. In this novel, he presents Garrett as a man he knew, as a thoughtful and generous professional. The novel starts out with a humorous bank robbery in Bolan, New Mexico, by red-headed Ross McEwen. McEwen rides south, evading all of the posses sent after him. Finally, in order to throw them off his trail near the White Sands desert, he releases his horse and starts riding a steer. He comes across a cabin containing a Mexican family (a mother, two sons, and a grandfather), all of whom have contracted diphtheria. Without hesitating, he starts to help them. One of the things remarkable about this book is how an author, born in 1869, and living among "gringos" in New Mexico is able to write a novel in the 1920s treating Caucasians and Hispanics so equally. There is no bigotry here. Perhaps, bigotry between "gringos" and Mexicans was not as prevalent in the Southwest as the more recent films and novels would have us believe. At least, not among Westerners. Notice that the "hero" of the book doesn't even hesitate to think about helping the family. He does it even though it may lead to his capture. Perhaps this is another typically Western response. The book was made into a poorly-received film released in the late 1940s entitled "Four Faces West" starring Joel McCrea and Charles Bickford.

The Path To Success Starts With You
I purchased the two inspiring audio cassettes, "The Path To High Achievement" because I wanted to see what makes the famous and successful tick.

What I found were useful, practical methods that were clearly articulated by Dr. Griessman in a way that made me learn a lot about myself. I highly recommend this motivational program to anyone who wants to get ahead in life and follow the steps of those already there.

It won't happen overnight or simply by listening. You must put these tactics into play in your everyday life in order to overcome any obstacles along the way to your own personal achievement.

In other words, this course of action is for anyone that wants proven techniques for success!

Pavn: Peoples Army of Vietnam

Author: Douglas Eugene Pike
Average review score:

The strategy of the other side
Douglas Pike performed a valuable service to history by capturing the essence of the North Vietnamese strategy for victory in the Vietnam War. His explanation of the various techniques used to win not only victory on the battlefield, but, more importantly, strategic and political victories over both the American and South Vietnamese opponents, should be mandatory reading for anyone interested in how the United States lost this war. Well written and researched, this book is both enjoyable and disturbing.
